French Immersion Tips for Teachers

It can be difficult to encourage students who are learning French to read and converse in their new language! Here are some ideas to help:

  • Build a robust French classroom library with books that offer a wide range of reading levels and a variety of interests!
  • Introduce your students to French music, movies, games, and traditions!
  • Encourage your students to extend their vocabulary beyond the school environment! Take field trips to French theatre, festivals, or concerts.
  • Ensure homework assignments are explained in class and are reviewing skills your students have already learned at school.
  • Ease parents’ worries! Tell them they don’t need to speak French to help by reinforcing the habits their child needs to complete their work independently, such as concentration, critical thinking, organization, and problem solving.
  • Encourage parents to read with their children, even if they don’t speak French!
