French Immersion Building Your Library

According to the Kids & Family Reading Report™ Canadian Edition, many children have trouble finding books they like. Try some of these tips to have a wider selection in your French Immersion library:

  • Offer a wide variety of genres, series, characters, and authors!
  • Order from Scholastic Reading Club! This is a great way to stock up on expertly-curated French books!
  • Include high-interest/low vocabulary books for those who are reading at a lower level, but still need topics and stories that are age-appropriate. See inside pages on our website to judge if the books are the right level for your students.
  • Experts suggest that your classroom library should have at least 20 books per student.
  • Ask friends, family, and other teachers to donate any French books they’re finished with.
  • If you live in or are visiting a city with a large French-speaking population, check out used book stores and garage sales for affordable books.
  • Encourage students to try reading their favourite English books in French!
